Twenty-five brand-new fourth grade students will start the year with this back to school scavenger hunt. When? Bright and early tomorrow morning.

This activity is meant to make them a welcome part of their new classroom . . . and to fill a little time while everyone is unpacking.

I've made it editable for you too. Just click on the image to download.

Research-Based Instructional Strategies

Research-based instructional strategies make us better teachers. Before we head back to school, let's review what the research says. In the first edition of Classroom Instruction that Works, Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock, nine strategies with a strong effect size are outlined.

Instead of commenting on each of these, I'll just post the list. Consider it food for thought. This year, I plan to increase my use of these strategies. To see how, follow my new blog, Enjoy Teaching.

Enjoy Teaching

Times change. Teachers change.

Throughout my career, I've been teaching seriously. Now, more than ever, I find it important to enjoy teaching.

So, I've begun a new blog, Enjoy Teaching. Please join me there for weekly ideas, links, and freebies.

My goal is to help other teachers love their chosen profession for ten, twenty, thirty, or more years.

Martin Luther King, Junior

As January begins, my thoughts turn to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior. How can we keep his legacy alive? How can we share his essence with the students we teach?

In August of 2012, I shared an activity to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the I Have a Dream speech. As Dr. King's birthday approaches, I'd like to share it again. Simply click on either image to access the file.
